Overview

Get to know Tafi del Valle and Ruins of Quilmes

Tafi del Valle is a town in the Valle Calchaquíes, located in the province of Tucumán. It is located 2000 meters above sea level and delights its visitors with its brown and green landscape that contrasts with the blue sky. Tafi del Valle is the owner of a dam that reflects the sunlight and roads that have witnessed hundreds of stories.

The Quilmes Ruins are also located in the Calchaquí Valley. In ancient times, they belonged to a people called the Kilmes, who were later banished. Today it is an archaeological site, full of history and culture, which has become an obligatory stop when visiting Tucumán.

To visit Tafi del Valle and Ruinas de Quilmes, we drive through the sugar cane and productive interior of Tucumán traveling along RN38 to the south. Then, Route 307 marks the ascent to the Valleys. The road goes into the Quebrada del Río Los Sosa and there we stop to visit the monument "El Indio". Further up, we reach El Mollar to visit Los Menhires. Then we visit the picturesque town of Tafí del Valle. The RP 307 ascends the Calchaquíes Valleys in a steep zigzag to the Abra del Infiernillo, at 3.042m. Amaicha del Valle: we visit the square and its surroundings. Here we will have free time to visit the Pachamama Museum.

After joining RN 40, the Sacred City of Quilmes bursts in on the left. On the slope of the hill you can see the reconstructions of the defensive zone, topped by a fortress located on the top and two forts on both sides. Next, we walk through the Quilmes Ruins, what was the last bastion of aboriginal resistance to the Spanish advance.

Finally, we start our return trip to Tucumán, ending our visit to Tafi del Valle and Quilmes Ruins. A day full of history in which we will have learned and enjoyed the local culture.
