Cerro Tronador is located in the southern part of the Andes Mountains, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It separates two national parks: the Nahuel Huapiin the provinces of Rio Negro and Neuquén, Argentina; and the Vicente Pérez Rosales in the province of Llanquihue, Chile.
To start the excursion, we leave from Clemente Onelli street to the south, which connects with National Route 258. Then we cross Pampa de Huenuleu to reach Lake Gutiérrez, bordering Pilmayen and Melgarejo streams. After leaving this lake, we will later go along the eastern shore of Lake Mascardi, which is characterized by its crystal-clear waters.
Continuing along this route, the road forks to the right, taking National Route 254 and the road to Cerro Tronador (gravel road). This route must be taken crossing the bridge over the Manso River, bordering again the Mascardi Lake on its west shore. We will pass in front of Cerro los Emparedados and border the upper Manso River until we reach Pampa Linda.
Then we will cross part of the valley of the Vuriloches and finally, passing through a shady forest, we will reach the Ventisquero Negro. The route ends a little further on at the foot of Cerro Tronador. From this point we can walk to the tongue of the glacier.
The Ventisquero Negro, a black glacier whose origin is the immaculate white of the summit of Mount Tronador. This is the source of the Manso River that flows down the mountain to reach the Pacific Ocean. The three peaks of the Tronador are: Argentino (3,410m), Internacional ( 3,554 m) and Chileno (3,430 m), ascended by mountaineers in summer.
The excursion to Cerro Tronador can be done in summer combining the navigation of Lake Mascardi to Hotel Tronador and then continue by land to Pampa Linda (base of Cerro Tronador).
At the appointed time we leave San Carlos de Bariloche for Cerro Tronador, bordering the Gutierres and Mascardi lakes.
Continuing along this route, the road forks to the right, taking National Route 254 and the road to the Tronador (gravel road). We will take this route crossing the bridge over the Manso River, again bordering Lake Mascardi on its western shore.
We will pass in front of Cerro los Emparedados and border the upper Manso River until we reach Pampa Linda.
Then we will cross part of the valley of the Vuriloches and finally, passing through a shady forest, we arrive at the Ventisquero Negro.
We will finish the tour a little further on at the foot of Cerro Tronador, from where we will walk to the tongue of the glacier itself.
After this extensive tour, we start our return trip to San Carlos de Bariloche.
